Overview

Dodington Park Estate is on the boundary between South Gloucestershire and the county of Avon balanced on the Cotswold Escarpment. At the centre of the estate is Dodington House an 18th Century Georgian mansion which is currently being used as a private home.

When you come to work at Dodington Park, you’ll be joining a team of dedicated staff who work towards the renovation and maintenance of the house and surrounding estate, and where we always strive to achieve the highest possible standards of work and craftsmanship. 

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Site/Works Manager to join the management team on a prestigious private Estate.  We are looking for someone work with the Head of Property to manage the safe and efficient running of multiple conversation/construction project sites (all based on one large premises or surrounding area) on a day-to-day basis.

You will be the eyes and ears on the ground and will be expected to drive productivity, ensure quality of work, and act as a champion of health and safety, all whilst maintaining positive professional relationships – we’re looking for a coach, not a bulldog. You will be the first port-of-call when something goes wrong, and/or someone needs support, so the confidence and credibility to deal with issues and challenges (only escalating where necessary) is crucial.

Role Specific Responsibilities

Commercial knowledge: Providing expert insight into likely costing and timescales for a wide variety of building tasks across a number of trades (including, carpentry, plumbing, electrics, stonemasonry, decorating and groundwork).

Benchmarking: Establishing a KPI/benchmarking system, and monitoring efficiency/performance against it.

Improvement: Acting as a driving force behind improving productivity/creating efficiencies.

Quality Management: ensure that the staff/contractors engaged on the project are completing work to a high-quality standard and within reasonable time frames. Monitoring productivity and quality, and feeding this information up.

Contractor Management: Manage on-site relationships with contractors, conduct contractor processes (e.g. safety rules/induction). Develop a feedback/monitoring system to evaluate suppliers and determine further use.

Site Safety Management: On-the-ground management of site H&S. Working with managers/contractors to ensure hazards are identified and safety control measures are in place.

Project management input: Assisting the Head of Property and Project Manager to scope, budget, and resource plan projects.

CDM: Create and manage CDM processes for projects.

Deputise: Act as the second-in-command to the Head of Property – supporting him in undertaking his duties, and providing step-up cover when he is absent.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

Role Model: Act as a Health and Safety role model, ensuring you comply with all relevant Estate Health and Safety and Environment (HSE) practices and procedures, as outlined in the Health and Safety Policy.

Supervision: Ensure that all persons under your supervision comply with relevant Estate Health and Safety and Environment (HSE) practices and procedures, and that the relevant health and safety documentation in place.

Best Practice: Promote best working practices, and ensure that safe working systems are followed by all members of staff – reminding others of their H&S responsibilities, and reporting incidents/near misses directly when necessary. 

Person specification

  • Significant experience in a similar Site Manager (or similar) role.
  • CDM Coordinator qualification.
  • Expert knowledge of a wide variety of construction tasks/trades, and an understanding of the timescales/costings/quality requirements associated with them/their work.
  • Hold a NEBOSH/IOSH (or similar H&S) qualification.
  • Experience of working with listed buildings.
  • Proven abilities in driving productivity and improvement.
  • Familiarity with efficiency principles (e.g. Lean/Time-Motion)
  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills; understanding that having motivated people is key to success within your role.
  • Willing to take responsibility and ownership for tasks.
  • Practical and pro-active – a real driving force to get things done.
  • Flexible approach to work, with the ability to adapt to challenges.
  • Confident communication skills, with they ability to influence and persuade whilst focusing on maintaining positive relationships.
  • Professional manner, with the ability to interact with individuals from a range of backgrounds.
  • Strong sense of discretion, appreciating the confidentiality of the work.
  • Keen to suggest improvements to current ways of working.
  • Ability to work autonomously when required, whilst still possessing strong team work skills.
  • Willing to ‘muck in’.
